The Tokyo Olympics will continue but it feels in name only

In 1964, but 20 years far away from world war II, Japan used the Summer Olympics to showcase its astonishing recovery from a horrific defeat.

It was an unquestionable victory for the host nation.

The Tokyo Games this time around is a billion-dollar test of survival amid a long-running pandemic.

Despite the mixed messages coming from top officials, not to mention the steadfast opposition of the overwhelming majority of Japanese citizens, these Olympics will present happen this summer.

There's an excessive amount of money at stake for there to be the other outcome.

But it's clear this may be an Olympics in name only, stripped of the enjoyment and charm and lofty ideals that make it a convention unlike the other (sorry, Masters), leaving only the stench of well-deserved cynicism.

Forget the thousands of foreign fans from all over the world who turned the streets of Tokyo into a plantation of humanity because they were not allowed to come to Japan.
