Monica Puig, the reigning Olympic gold medallist in ladies' singles tennis, said she will miss the Tokyo Games and the remainder of the 2021 season in the wake of going through shoulder a medical procedure.
Puig, 27, turned into the main competitor addressing Puerto Rico to win Olympic gold in 2016 when she crushed Angelique Kerber 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the ladies singles last at the Rio Olympics.
"About seven days prior I went through my second shoulder a medical procedure to fix my rotator sleeve and biceps ligament and this places me in an exceptionally troublesome position and sitting out of the Tokyo Olympics this year," Puig said on Instagram on Sunday.
"It is troublesome and it was with a substantial heart I took this choice. Clearly, my group and I are thinking long haul and delaying my profession for however many years as could reasonably be expected and wanting to play in the Paris 2024 Olympics."
The World No. 168 last played at the 2020 French Open where she was taken out in the first round.
The Tokyo Olympics are booked to be held from July 23-August 8.
